LULAC Council 10 will celebrate its 50th Anniversary Gala

LULAC Council 10 of the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) will celebrate its 50thAnniversary Gala commemorating the council’s historical presence in the Quad Cities since 1959. The 50thAnniversary Gala will be on Thursday, April 30, 2009, from 6:00 PM to 11:00 PM, at the River Center in Davenport. Tickets for the event are $25 per person. before April 21st. The event will include a buffet dinner, a cash bar and live Mexican dance music by RitMex. LULAC National President Rosa Rosales of San Antonio, Texas is scheduled to attend and speak at the event.
Postvilleâs Agriprocessors Files for Bankruptcy, Meat Supplies Fall and Prices Rise

The raiding of Agriprocessor’s Postville plant has forced the plant to close, and the company filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy last week. The detention of 389 immigrant workers, 300 of whom were imprisoned for five months there was a fatal blow to the rural company and has triggered a shortage of kosher meats nationwide, Agriprocessors being one of the largest producers of kosher meat in the nation, producing 60% of the national total.
The memory of the dead was brought to life with Casa Guanajuato’s annual celebration of Day of the Dead. This years event took place on Sunday November 2nd at the Figge Art Museum in Downtown Davenport. The evening began with a record crowd of 700 attendants. The Quad Cities Ballet Folklorico performed dances from the state of Nayarit and impressed the crowd with dances like the machete dance and la bruja. Upstairs at the Figge, 7 alters were on display for the public to see. Artist Jesus Pastor from Guanajuato spoke in the auditorium about the tradition of Dia De Los Muertos and the importance of this being a joyous holiday of life and reminded the audience that no one is eternal on earth.
