It is time for elections again. And there are a couple of Latino candidates running for office. This year in Rock Island County we will vote for County treasurer and County Sheriff.
•For the candidate for County Treasurer we have Louisa Terronez Ewert. She worked more than 17 years for the Treasurer’s office and the present treasurer endorses her. Her family is from Leon, Guanajuato. Her uncle Joe Terronez was the first Latino mayor in the city of Silvis and they say that he was the first Latino mayor in a whole state of Illinois. Her father Benny Terronez is well known in the community because he was the owner of the Moline Community Center.
Louisa commented that her family has been her role models especially her grandparents who emigrated from Mexico.
•The other candidate is also Latino although his name might not sound Latino. He is Jeff Boyd who is running for the County Sheriff.
He worked for 20 years in the department of sheriffs of Rock Island County and he is a member of the Association of Hispanic Officers of the Law.
He has the necessary experience and education for the position (He is a graduate of Augustana College with a degree in Political Science and he has a Master’s Degree from Western Illinois University).
His great grandparents Carmen y Jesus Flores emigrated from Durango, Mexico to the United States when his grandfather Rafael Flores was only 3 years old. They came to work for the railroad company. When we asked him why he wanted to be a County Sheriff he answered that he wanted to move the department forward and to bring diversity to the Sheriff’s office.
